Using a Mac? If you have avi files that you want to view in QuickTime and add to your iPhone then you will need to convert them first.

There are a number of plugin tools that will enable you to view them in QuickTime:

Perian - the Swiss army knife of QuickTime

Once Perian is downloaded and installed, then restart your Mac and open the avi file. All being well, it should now show video as well as sound.

Some digital cameras and camcorders produce AVI videos with fourCC M4S2. You can find out if this is the case by opening your avi file in QuickTime and choosing Show Movie Inspector from the Window menu.

If your file is a Casio or Canon generated file (and Perian doesn't work) then try these links:

Canon QuickTime plugin for M4S2 (works with Mac OS 9 and X)

Casio QuickTime component for M4S2 importing

Copy the files into the QuickTime folder in Library on your hard drive. If you have installed Perian then you should see the perian.component file already there.

Now that you can view the avi file you will need to convert it to a .m4v file so that it can be read by the iPhone.

Again there are a number of tools for this but for ease of use then I recommend using QuickTime Pro which costs £20 in the UK. It allows you to export the file for web straight away from the File menu. You then simply add it to your iTunes library and sync or manually copy to your device.

UPDATE: The arrival of Snow Leopard may mean that this can be achieved with the new standard version of QuickTime.

Need a quick way to resize images without waiting ages for your current software package to open? Don't want to spend heaps on expensive tools? Then how about a slick freeware solution?

JustResizeIt! introduces a brand new way of resizing images – just drag and drop them!

Resize images easily

1. Drag one or more images into JustResizeIt!,
2. Wait a few seconds, and
3. Drag resized images into an e-mail, an office document, or a folder.

You can even create custom widgets - one for each of your resizing needs - that define how the images will be resized. For example, you can make a widget for sending photos in mail with a maximum size of 800 pixels. Or, a widget for resizing photos to upload into a web gallery at 50% of their original size. Batch operations? No problem!

Built using Adobe Air, it is specially designed to have a small fixed size window area. Try it - you'll love it!

Built by PERSPECTIVES Software Solutions to work with Windows, Macs and Linux, it's the best thing to come out of Switzerland since the Swiss Army Knife!

Merci vilmal!

A List Apart has some useful information on developing websites for Apple's iPhone.

While the iPhone has been designed so that you really don’t need to do anything with your site for it to display correctly, there is one area where you may want to make a small modification to deal with the problem of fitting a relatively large web page onto a small phone display. By specifying the size of the iPhone’s viewport you ensure that you make best use of the available screen space.

When you open a page in Mobile Safari, it will render a 980-pixel-wide section of your website (Apple chose this size to accommodate the largest number of websites). It will then shrink these 980 pixels to the iPhone’s 320-pixel-wide screen.

Thanks to a new <meta> tag recognized by the iPhone, you can control the behavior of the viewport. For example, your website may have been created in the days when a width of 760 pixels was the norm to accommodate average browser resolutions of 800 pixels wide. By specifying the following <meta> tag inserted in the head section of your page, you can tell Mobile Safari how big to make the initial viewport:

<meta name="viewport" content="width=760" />

This cuts the number of pixels the iPhone has to squeeze onto its screen from 980 to 760. It may not seem like much, but when you consider that the phone’s display width is just 320 pixels, it really does make a big difference.

With the increasing popularity of Apple's iPhone, many people may be viewing your website via the iPhone's mobile safari browser.

Naturally with content so compelling, your visitors will want to add your site to their home page, in which case you should create a custom webclip icon. Without a custom icon the iPhone will simply use a mini representation of your home page.

Creating a custom iPhone icon for your website is extremely easy. Using your favourite graphic application, create a new document sized 158 x 158 pixels. Don't worry about those rounded corners - the iPhone automatically applies these to your finished icon, as well as adding a nice glassy look to the background.

When you have finished creating your icon, save it as a .png calling it 'apple-touch-icon.png' and upload to the document root of your website. There is no need to add anything to your web pages. Using this method, the webclip icon will be used for your entire website.

If you don't however have access to the website root or want to locate the image elsewhere then simply add this to the <head> section of your pages:

<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/images/your_icon_name.png"/>

To add the icon to your iPhone home page, browse to your site in your iPhone Safari browser and then click the '+' symbol at the bottom of the page. Select 'Add to Home Page' and edit the title if necessary. Click 'Add' and your shiny new icon will then be added.

Statcounter has launched a new global stats tool which lets you see at a glance how the various browsers are performing. Stats can be viewed on a worldwide or a UK basis. Other regional countries and breakdowns are also available.

For example, the mobile browser stats tool shows that in the UK, the iPhone and iPod Touch lead the market with 31% and 20% of the global browser market respectively. This is followed by Nokia (13%), BlackBerry (9.6%) and Opera (7.5%). Sony PSP has 6% of the mobile browser market in the UK.

The StatCounter research data is based on four billion pageloads per month.

Unsurprisingly the global stats also confirm Google's dominance with 89.99% of the search engine market followed by Yahoo with 4.28%.

IE is still the browser of choice for the majority with 68.28% of users compared with 24.52% for Firefox.
